Last year Veeam released a free backup tool for physical systems called Endpoint Backup. As well as being a great tool for backing up laptops and desktops, it can also be integrated with Veeam Backup and Replication (VBR) so that you can protect workloads running on physical boxes, such as Active Directory, Exchange, SQL and SharePoint. The beauty of this is that you can now backup these physical workloads to a VBR repository and use Veeam Explorers for item level restores.

It can do incremental forever to disk, supports tape libraries so you can offload and do disk to disk to tape very easily. It also has options to create a full backup from the incremental forever disk pool and offload it to another disk pool or tape. Veeam v8 Forever Incremental. First it creates the VIB file. Once the retention points are satisfied, it will inject the oldest VIB file in the VBK file. Again this process is fairly random but should be 33% less I/O then reverse incremental backup during merge and it is performed after the snapshots are deleted on the VM.

It seems likely thatso this is a good time to start experimenting!( Note: For my up-to-date guide covering Windows Agent 2.2 and VBR 9.5 U3a, go )In my lab I run Veeam Availabilty Suite v9 with separate VMs for VBR and VeeamOne. I decided to experiment by installing Endpoint on my VeeamOne system and direct my backups to a VBR repository.Endpoint Backup can be downloaded.So the first step is to define a repository for Endpoint jobs. In my case,i created a dedicted repository. This was simply a local folder on my backup server. The next important step is to set permissions on this repository so that it can be accessed by the Endpoint backup process. I created a dedicated AD user called VeeamUser1 specifically for this task. Going into the VBR console, navigate to the Backup Infrastructure view and select the Backup Repositories node.

Now, according to the, you should see a button for Endpoint Permissions on the ribbon, or be able to do a simple right click on the repository that you wan to use and get an option to set permissions. Perhaps this is coming in a future release of VBR but, in my case, neither option was immediately available. The solution was to hold down the CTRL key while right-clicking on the repository. I was now able to see the option for permissions:Note 1: Since writing this post I have been in contact with Veeam who have explained to me why the permissions are not immediately available as follows: “Veeam Endpoint Backup-related permission management gets visible once you have an active job pointed to this repository.

By default this option is not displayed, as Veeam B&R customers might be 100% virtual only and this setting will not be relevant for them”. Makes sense.Note 2: Since adding Note 1 above, I have been testing Veeam 9.5 in my lab. I’ve noticed that there is now a button on the menu ribbon that allows you to set permissions on a repository so that it becomes available as a target for agent-based backups. The button is labeled “Agent Permissions” and is available as soon as the new version of Veeam is installed.Add your user to the list:Now go back to the system (in my case my VeeamOne server) to install the Endpoint Backup software (you’ll notice that I’m avoiding using the word agent as it might lead to some confusion as to how the software works. Essentially, every system running Endpoint is its own backup server). Double-click on the installation package to launch the installation wizard (if User Account Control is enabled you may get a warning message at this stage which you will need to acknowledge before proceeding).

Agree to the EULA and click Install:At this stage you will need to reboot the system to complete the installation:After the reboot, you’ll notice that there are some new program items available:Going into Services, you’ll see that Endpoint has installed a new service that is set for automatic startup and runs constantly in the background:There is also a new taskbar item available. By right-clicking on the Endpoint taskbar icon we can access a range of utilities. The first one that we will need to run is Control Panel in order to configure our backups:You will see that nothing is configured at this stage. Click on Configure backup:Choose a backup mode. In this case we are going to select Entire computer:Select a destination. Since we want to integrate our VBR server, we will choose Veeam Backup and Replication repository:Next, we enter the FQDN or IP address of the VBR server and the credentials of the user that we have given permissions to the VBR repository previously:The wizard will give us a list of all repositories to which we have permissions. Select a repository from the drop-down list and specify the number of restore points to keep:Now we specify a schedule.

Remember that since the backups are controlled by Endpoint Backup and not by the VBR server, all scheduling must be set at the client end (at least in this release). There are also options for kicking of the backup job following certain events, such as locking the locking the computer, logging off and when a bckup target is connected (useful when backing up a laptop to an external USB drive). In my case I’ve simply chosen a daily backup.On the summary page we get the option to run the backup job as soon as we click Finish. Since I was testing this in my lab, I selected this option so that I could see the results immediately.The Endpoint Control Panel allows us to track the progress of the job:Here you can see the results of the first full backup and the following incremental backup. Note that Endpoint uses a forever forward incremental backup process, so every backup going forward will be an incremental.Looking into the VBR repository you can see that there are some familiar Veeam backup files – a VBK file for the full backup, a VIB file for the incremental, and a VBM metadata file.In my next posts I’ll go though the process for a file-level restore and a bare-metal restore.

Can someone please first explain in layman's terms what the differences are between Forward, Reverse, Active Full, and Synthetic full backups and why I would chose one over another? I read about it on Veeam's website, but it is still confusing to me. We have about 10 backup group currently managed by Veeam.

Each of those backup group house about 10 VMs. About half of our backup group are scheduled to run an active full backup once a month on a Sat or Sun, and some are set to run full active backups once a week. When this once a month active full backup takes place, it holds other jobs in queue, and as a result will error out causing other backup jobs in queue to fail. I have about 7 restore points set for each bakcup group.I'm just curios, how do most IT admins configure Veeam in their environment? Maybe if I can follow the same best practice approach, I might not run into to many issues with backup jobs failing. Hi,I am using Veeam in Forever Forward mode, with 5 incremental backups.

What this mode does, it will create a full backup of VM, and after that it will do an incremental backup. After 5 days of creating incremental, on 6th day, it will create another incremental, and then it will merge oldest incremental with full backup.

By doing that you will end up again with full backup and 5 incremental. That process is going to go on forever.Good thing about this process is that after first full backup, every incremental is going to be done much faster, since it will transfer only changed blocks of data. Bad thing is that in case you need to restore data that is taken in 5th incremental, you will need to restore full + all 5 incremental backups.and that will take time.Now, Active full would be a good idea, because one time I had a problem with HDD, that caused some of my backups not to be able to merge (Full with incremental). Active full is going to create full backup, at a certain day that you have specified. Good thing about this is that restore process may be much faster then restoring from Forever Forward, in situations when you need to restore data taken at same day when active full was done.I am not using Synthetic, because I don't need it, but after reading your problem, maybe that would be a good idea for your situation. Synthetic is going to use all of your backups and it is going to create full backup out of it.

If you have a fast storage then that process could be done fast, and you wont need to transfer data over network. All is done on storage it self. If you decide to try it, configure it only on one backup set, and see how fast will it go, so that in case of problem, you don't slow down your entire backup process.I do monitor backup results everyday, so in case of problem, I can create new backup as needed.Regards,Ivan. Hmm.When you do Active full backup, after 1 month, then backup chain will use that full backup as starting point.

So it should be: 1 full + 6 incremental and then every new incremental should force oldest to be merged with full bck.After 1 month, when full active is done, then everything should go from that point, and old full + incremental should be deleted, according to retention policy.I guess there is some bug going on, or I am missing something:)You sure Retention policy on that backup is 7?:)Regards. One more thing.You said that you have about 10 VM in every backup group. If that is so, maybe you have deleted some of VM from your environment, or have moved them to another Host server?If that is so, then Veeam will keep all of those backup's because if they got deleted, you will permanently lose data from those possibly deleted VM. Now, if everything is as I said, then you should turn on deletion of VM from backup sets, that have been deleted/ moved.When you edit backup, in Advanced job settings, go to Advanced, and there is setting called 'VM retention'. It says 'Remove deleted VMs data from backup after xx days'.Turn it on, and then Veeam will delete that data, and after it, it will delete old incremental backup.Regards,Ivan.
