Note to Administrators: Thanks for moving this to where it belongs!A friend gave me this relic of the late 60's and early 70's, a Hohner HI-210R. I first saw this amp when my friend brought it to band practice about six years ago and it sounded pretty decent. Then again, this guy is a very good guitar player and I've observed that good players can make anything sounds great. That said, it's one of those cheap amps built in the 60's designed to capture the hordes of teenagers seeking to become guitar gods.
Every department store and mail order catalog had all kinds of low-end offerings like this one, and a lot of them, perhaps even most of them were solid state. It's a vertical 2X10 configuration with a fender blackface-style front panel. This little baby has reverb, delay and something called Quadra-Sound -Blender (maybe a chorus?). None of those cool features work at all in this guy, but it has a really nice, biting but smooth clean tone that I really like.It has 2 10' speakers made by Rola:Anyhow, my friend picked up a Marshall DSL whatever for gigs and a Fender Super Champ for practices so he no longer needed this guy and was going to throw it in the dumpster. I took it off his hands with an idea to do something interesting with it.That was four years ago and it's sat in my garage ever since. This week I was going through my parts bin and realized I had enough spare doohickeys laying around to put together another amp of some kind and I thought of the old Hohner rotting away in my garage, and the question of what to do with it was answered. So this thread is about converting this:into a nice little 5E3 amp.
The 5E3 circuit is a wildly popular DIY circuit owing to it's great sound and it's relatively simple construction, so it's a great choice for this 12x6x2 chassis. Unfortunately it's a relatively thin aluminum shell with a great gaping cutout under the circuit board. My first concern as I looked at this thing was how thin the chassis metal actually is. It's not actually flexible, but it's light enough that I worry about the weight of the 5E3 transformers hanging under it. I also wonder if it's a terribly good idea to have the circuit board exposed like this, and I'm considering bolting a plate over it for safety's sake, along with running some L-shaped brackets to stiffen it. We'll see how things go.I'm also going to have to cut a pretty significant hole for the power transformer bell and I'm not really very good at doing work like that.
I have no doubt I'll end up chopping a rather ragged looking port for that.As you can see by the pics I posted, the amp has some serious miles on it. It's pretty beat up and the tolex is peeling off in places. There's a lot fewer knobs on the 5E3 than this amp has, and I'm going to have to cut some other holes to accommodate the four input jacks and the jewel light among the many holes that are already there. So right off the bat I've decided that this isn't going to be a terribly pretty amp when I'm done. The goal here is not to make a looker but to build a very nice sounding practice/rehearsal amp. I've decided on the for this build.
I really like his redesign of the classic layout and he stocks a very complete parts inventory for this amp in his store that I can use to fill any hardware gaps I have. So the first thing I do is a detailed inventory of the parts I have and compare that to the parts I'm going to need. My method for this is relatively simple. I grab the parts I need and tape them to a piece of paper. My method is to grab the parts and my multi meter and cap meter and measure everything as I go.

In doing this I've notice that I have a number of relatively new resistors that are wildly out of spec. I have a batch of 1M resistors that measure around 450K!
I was so surprised by this that I changed the battery in my meter just to be sure. I also have several 220K resistors that are very near their 10% tolerance limit.
Fender spec'ed most of these components at 20% if I recall, but still. So always measure, kids!In the end I have to order both a the power and output transformers, the 16uf filter caps, some odd resistors and some chassis hardware (jewel lamp assembly, AC cord strain relief, stuff like that.) Fortunately I have all the hookup wire, tube sockets and screws/nuts on hand that I need for this amp. I'm into this guy for about $100 so far. Here I've started wiring the the AC supply, fuse, switch and lamp and I've begun laying out the tap wires. I like to use tag strips to make it easier to replace a blown power transformer.
It's a bit of a pain, but not as big a pain as having to re-wire sockets. Note the raggedy looking hole for the transformer. You can also see the two 100 ohm resistors used to provide a ground reference for the heater taps. Here's the kind of crap that I do when I get tired but don't stop working.
I was drilling the hole for the jewel lamp and went one step too far, so the jewel lamp socket dropped right through the now too big hole. So I took the scrap of aluminum that came out of the transformer cut out and bolted it over the hole and redrilled it. It works but I think this amp is going to have quite the steam punk look to it. Click to expand.I do plan to use 22's as coupling caps but I hadn't considered a 5D3 and don't know much about that variation. Thanks for the head's up on that. I'm kind of on amp probation right now, having built an 18 watt and a Deluxe Reverb clone.
I was only able to sell this to the wife because I had many of the parts on hand and I planned to recycle the old cab. Christmas is always a challenging time of year for scratching the amp building itch. What specifically do you have a hard time with in his schematics? Just curious, really. Click to expand. The speakers aren't marked with any power or impedance ratings but I measure 7.5 ohms wired in parallel so I suspect these are 16 ohm speakers and an 8 ohm load. Edit: The Rola catalog has lots of speakers rated at 15 ohms, but the model in this amp (M10N25-004) isn't in that catalog. It's probably an OEM speaker made specifically for Marlboro, the manufacturer of this amp.
7.5 ohms is right in the ballpark for a nominal 8 ohm load so let's go with that.I have no idea how these guys will sound with this circuit or how much life is left in them. I have a Weber Blue Pup on hand if these guys stink, and if it sounds good I'll get a Weber Silver Bell to go with it. The OT I bought has a bunch of taps so I'm going to put a jack for each of them on the back. There's plenty of room.
